Thanks to bureaucratic reforms, the European Union expects land within the Community for growing fuel, rather than food, will increase from 13m hectares in 2010 to close on 20m hectares by 2030. Removing agricultural subsidies in America would have a similar effect. We asked Jan-Erik Petersen of the European Environment Agency to explain the consequences of the coming “big land switch”.
