 China's Energy Challenge

Voracious energy consumption will soon propel China to the top of the world league of CO2 emitters. The Chinese government is making an effort to diversify away from coal, which accounts for 70% of its total energy consumption, but is shying away from difficult policy choices that would hasten this process. China's growing reliance on imported oil has also impelled it to seek close ties with some controversial regimes in Africa and the Middle East. Has China's energy quest become a global problem, and, if so, what are the solutions?

Its a no-brainer really: of course China should sign up to emissions-reduction targets! However I fear it might not be very easy to get them to do it. Isnt Chinas arguement that if the US is willing to sign up to the Kyoto agreement why should they?

The Kyoto Protocol has not imposed Emissions-reduction targets on developing countries, since over the last century mostly the developed countries were responsible for greenhouse gas emissions.
Nevertheless, it would be a good sign to voluntarily impose an emissions-reduction target. It would set an example for other non-Kyoto countries to follow.
China and other developing countries now have the opportunity to avoid the mistakes that have been done in the past. A lot of the infrastructure has to be built from scratch and that gives the chance to do this with efficient and clean technology.
China is supposed to become the biggest seller of CERs soon and foreign investments through the CDM mechanism will especially help the country to implement cleaner energy generation.

Unless China has a strong financial incentive to do so, they will likely continue to produce energy in the cheapest manner possible. Due to the massive scale of the current infrastructure, it would be the dirtiest also. Doesn't their past record speak to how they would handle themselves when faced with such a moral dilemma?

Developed countries were the ones responsible of greenhouse gas emissions and now they are looking on ways to reduce it! and still, the US is not willing to sign the Kyoto Protocol, why is that??
But there is a big pressure over China to become a develop country by reducing emissions… I believe this is the main issue of sustainability, not only for China but also for other developing countries; governments and investors have to think of ways to use energy in a responsible way looking further on what we are going to give our children and future generations.

Yes, China has to definitely sign up to the emission-reduction targets. With increase in the consumption level of energy, where the emission becomes hazardous to the environment, developing countries like China to should take part in the emission-reduction programmes and make a better future to the young and future generations. A good infrastructure and good environment will definitely increase the productivity and economy of the people in a country. I think by the end of 21st century, China should have implemented the emission-reduction techniques to keep the people and economy safe.

China as USA should sign up to emissions-reduction targets.
Signing up the Kioto protocol will be no enough.
It is quite important to educate every body in the risk of global warming.

If we are serious on Emission as individual, then collectively we can change the mindset.
Don't need agreement to tell us what to do - JUST DO IT RIGHT to protect the environment for the future.
God created the world and he declared that IT WAS GOOD. But men decides to pollute it and expecting that nature will blow it over to someone's yard (back or front).
It's time to do what's right and correct the wrongs before it is too late.

It will be very difficult for a land like China ( and India too) to sign a protocol on emission reduction.
You can do this as a country which has obtained a long time status-quo.
Then there is a chance that by optimising existing processe a reduction can be obtained.

But when progressively developing like China and India you are far from
reduction.
You can do better then existing countries by investing in the best technologies available to have the best efficiency but nevertheless the
Emissions will grow
